Rose-colored glassesDo you have a pair of rose colored glasses? It's a REQUIREMENT for your Sustainable Happiness. Newsweek, October 24th and The Wall Street Journal, November 9th are highlighting the latest most exciting neuropsychological research breakthroughs in happiness science: the importance of optimism for the health of our brains. It turns out that our brain has a center for optimism and if that center is not developed we get depressed. That seems pretty black and white to me. Think about it, how many happy pessimists do you know? Probably not very many… believing in gloom and doom does not make you happy. Remember sustainable happiness is not rocket science, it is just a matter of what we focus on. In this case, our rose colored glasses.
So when you feel like your optimism has run out and there is nothing but doom and gloom around you, remember those people in the planes who have evidence that the sun is shining. There is always a silver lining to the cloud, we have a choice on how we interpret our reality. We can choose to know that the sun is shining no matter what (there always is a silver lining) and shift our thinking from being pessimistic to optimistic. What do you have to lose here? I really want to encourage you pessimists out there to try on those rose colored glasses just for a week, and see if you in fact do get happier. I bet you will! For those already optimists out there, remember we have to continue to stretch that optimistic muscle otherwise we have depression to answer to…. Thanks to the latest research in neuroscience that proves it! Encourage everyone you know to get his or her pair of rose-colored glasses! Our sustainable happiness needs 'props' and this one is essential! Dr. Aymee Coget is CEO of the American Happiness Association.
